When: 20 October 2004
Who: Megumi, Remy
What: Megumi steals a visit to the library to borrow Dracula, but more importantly, compliment Remy incessantly.

The University - Austin

The campus of the University of Texas at Austin stretches over several square miles. The most striking area of the campus is the clock tower, which looms over the rest of the campus and glows depending on when the school wins a victory in something it considers important. The West Mall is also another large part of the campus, housing the school's Union and having an open grassed area in front of it with enough trees to give it suitable shading.

The southwest corner of the campus is where the Harry Ransom Center is. A massive library and archive area that has several rare books and artifacts that make it of special interest to Yves. Finally, the last place of major interest is a Tokamak reactor buried deep beneath the Math and Sciences Building; the reactor a source of constant interest by both servitors of Jean and Vapula.

The Harry Ransom Center, or just as often called 'the Library', is a popular place to visit for the studious. Given it's a university, there's many reasons why one might go there. To research, study, or maybe even just get some peace and quiet.

The librarian on duty, Remy, threads through the bookshelves, ensuring that everything remains in order, while also checking in on any students who look like they need help.

Does Megumi have specific EVIL in mind? Maybe. Maybe not. However, Remy -has- caught her interest, and she likes to read as well. Not boring economic books, but -Fiction-. Yes, Megumi loves losing herself in books in the Fiction section.

Megumi thusly slinks into the Library, and immediately upon entering, looks rather lost. A dazed look twinkles in her eye, she stumbles around, eyeing the shelves with glazed over looks.

Remy shuffles a couple books around that were incorrectly placed, then steps around the corner to see... Megumi. His expression doesn't change much, but a look of recognition is there are he approaches the lost-looking Megumi. "Hello there. I see you decided to look at the library more quickly than might have been expected.

Megumi raises an eyebrow and looks over to Remy, "Oh! Hello Remy!", as if she had not expected to see a Remy in the first place. She smiles sunnily and walks over to Remy as if he was a Compass to direct her (rather than a Compass to direct humans). She says, "I couldn't /stand/ to wait, especially after hearing about the Real Dracula not being a gluttonous two-dimensional sop. Well, as real as one can be in a book. There is quite an impressive selection here, you must be proud."

"I didn't create the selection, I merely maintain it." Remy offers by way of an answer. "However, if you are looking for a copy of Bram Stoker's Dracula, it can be located in the Fiction section under the appropriate alphabetization." He gestures in the direction of said section.

"Oh I didn't say that," Megumi says, and she didn't! Merely implied it heavily! "Keeping track of a massive selection is probably more impressive than actually building it. It is easy to collect, but hard to maintain, wouldn't you say? After all, you have to keep track of every single book every time, you can't just find it in a catalogue once and forget about it.", she glances around, "Fiction section?", dudedu.

Remy nods, and gestures again. "Yes, the fiction section. Come with me." He begins leading the way, as Megumi seems unable to locate it on her own. "It's not a difficult job, really."

Megumi says, "So what sorts of Fiction do you like? You don't have to pick a favorite, just any one among the many you like.", Megumi follows after Remy, "You must be rather good at it if it's not difficult for you."

Remy looks back to Megumi, slightly amused. "Are you always this rich with compliments, or are you just looking to flatter me?" Remy chuckles, glancing across an aisle with a sign labeled 'FICTION', and nods, heading towards a bookshelf. "It just takes practice. As far as what I like... I prefer books with happy endings."

"Well, I -do- have an alterior motive," Megumi practically chirps, "Do you wanna know what it is?", she spots the aisle and says, "Oh! So here it is!", she looks over various tomes and murmurs, "Hmm...Happy endings...I've heard Dracula has a happy ending, even if it's about someone who goes around biting people a lot.", a pause, "Do you believe in Vampires?"

"I've never met one." Remy shrugs, and he looks curiously at Megumi. "And what would be this ulterior motive of yours?" He appears to be rather focused on Megumi at the moment, scrutinizing her with a mild gaze.

Megumi glances on over to Remy, "I want to see you open up," she says plainly, "You seem pretty thoughtful...And you obviously have a lot of experience with books by neccessity, and I really, really like to read...and to talk about reading. Have you ever read or watched Richard the Third? One of the earlier plays, sure, but many theorists say he's an Evil Agent sent to wipe out Evil so that the next Henry can return the Proper Throne to England. This theory states that this is the case because of kings being linked to the divine, conceptually, during Will's time."

Remy looks pained for a moment, but his expression smooths out quickly as he replies. "That, sadly, is one I have not read yet. I've heard opinions about it, but I couldn't agree or disagree with you on your theory until I've done research of my own. You appear experienced in your chosen field of literature, however, and I'm sure in the future we will be able to have some rather interesting debates."

Megumi says, "Great, Grea-Ooh!", that last little bit almost comes out like a girlish squeal. Megumi bounds into a crouch and tugs out a book. She offers it to Remy, "Wind in the Willows," she says, "A Children's book in Genre only. Also has little a toad who crashes cars a lot.", she continues perusing various books as she adds, "Some people write some pretty interesting things. Even though these books are Fiction, even Shakespeare's Histories, they can tell some pretty powerful Truths. In that way, it's a lot like Non-Fiction really, the Genres aren't entirely seperate."

Remy smiles slightly, taking the book. "In a way, yes. Many of these pieces of fiction hold important lessons that can be applied to your real life. It is, however, important to remember that they are separate."

Megumi finds a Dracula, and takes it without any further commentary on Vampires. "There is a song called Fiction - Dreams in Digital. It's bizarre.", she searches a little more and finds a section on Shakespeare. She also snags up Julius Caesar and Titus Andronicus before standing up, "That Melissa is right, you do have a certain way with words."

"Do I now?" The librarian simply watches Megumi's actions, that small smile still present.

Megumi says, "Mmhmm, you say exactly what you mean, don't you?", she hugs the books she collected with a minor amount of obsession. "By the way, Sarah isn't embarrassed that I asked her to do an impersonation, is she?"

Remy shrugs at that. "Not that I know of... And yes, I do prefer to be direct and unambiguous in my speech." He glances down to the books. "Have you found everything you needed?"

Megumi says, "Mmm," to that, "I was feeling a bit impetuous by the end of that discussion.", she bobs her head, lips breaking out into a grin, "Mmhmm, is it okay that I took a few? It's just been a while since I've read Titus, men in pies."

"You may borrow the books, but you will have to check them out like anyone else... You /are/ enrolled, correct, miss...?" Remy blinks at Megumi, and considers that he never got her name...

Megumi wrinkles her nose, "Megumi Goodfellow, sir. Actually," she says offhandedly, "I'm in Highschool, but I take extra-classes here as part of a Student Program."

"Ah. I see. They call me Remy." He leads the student back towards the front counter. "You have a student ID, correct?"

Megumi sets the books down on the counter and sets her ID on the counter haphazardly. "Yes."

"All right then." He picks up the ID, and begins running it through the computer, making sure that she is eligible, has no outstanding dues, that everything is correct. Remy is a bit thorough.

It should work out! "When do you need these back by?" Megumi asks casually as she waits.

"Standard rental period is two weeks. You can then renew the books if they have not been requested in that time period." Remy scans the barcodes on the books (Whee, technology! Go Lightning!), and registers them as being checked out. "All right, you can now take the books with you."

Megumi takes the books. There are a few, thankfully she only took three and can carry it without a bag. "Two weeks, maybe I overdid it.", she bows her head, "Thank you very much for your help," she says.

Remy nods. "You're welcome. Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you." He looks down at the computer, and begins typing some stuff in.

Megumi hmms a little, "No, I think this is fine for now, if I only have two weeks I better not get more reading."

Remy chuckles. "Reading habits and speed vary, so only you would really know how much is enough for yourself."

Megumi says, "I'll re-read if I have the time, but .. 'things' .. tend to come up. I try to keep myself busy.", she bows her head, "Good evening to you, Remy, the honor's mine.", the bow is actually a little archaic in nature, but soon Megumi turns on a heel and steps right on out.
